WAR DOG Monument Dedicated at Orion Veterans Memorial

Recently a new War Dog Monument, which consists of two military war dogs on sand bags, was dedicated at the Orion Veterans Memorial. This monument commemorates the brave dogs who served with soldiers during wars and peacekeeping periods.

The half hour unveiling ceremony commenced with a blessing of the monument by Father John Cochran, Prior of the St. Augustine's Monastery.

Speakers included Dr. Joe Mastromatteo, chairman of the Orion Veterans' Memorial Committee and Phil Weitlauf, president of the War Dog Memorial.

The ceremony included a salute by retired War Dogs which were present with their owners.

The internationally renowned sculptor and Vietnam veteran Frank Varga, donated his services to create the War Dogs Monument. He also created the central monument at the memorial, which consists of a family of four in a
tender embrace. Steve Leach, welder of the War Dog Monument, also donated his services.

The Orion Veterans Memorial is located on Lapeer Road (M-24) at the corner of Odanah Street.

The Orion Veterans Memorial is a sacred place dedicated to honoring the service of all those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Special care has been taken to ensure that this site reflects the reverence
due to them.

The Veterans Memorial welcomes those who wish to contribute to the landscape beauty of this site. If you wish to do so, please contact the Board of Directors or their representative for approval. They may be reached at 248-693-6636.

If and when your plans are approved, please remember the Memorial is a sacred place. The bricks honor the dedication of veterans who fought for our freedoms. The bricks are treasured by many family and friends and should always be honored.  Thank You

The Orion Veterans Memorial is the Charter Township of Orion's tribute to the sacrifices made by the men and women of Orion and our country.

This memorial is not about war, it's about people and paying tribute to all the military service personnel who honorably served their country. We don't glorify war, we glorify the spirit of the men and women that fought for this great country. The focus of the memorial is on world peace and the debt of honor owed to those who have served.

Now, you can also be a part of hundreds who have donated contributions as individuals, families, corporations and organizations by putting their own name on an engraved brick in the"Commemorative Walkway" which is around the perimeter of the "Pathway to Peace" where the majority of the military personnel bricks are placed. You don't have to donate just for a living or deceased veteran who served in the military.

Show your patriotism by donating an "engraved brick".  When you do, you
honor all who have served and/or given their lives for our freedom!
Make a lasting tribute today!

How can I donate to the Orion Veterans Memorial?

Three available Paths to Donate:
Donate a "brick marker" in the "Pathway to Peace"
Donate a "brick marker" in the "Commemorative Brick Walkway"
"Monetary Donation" for maintenance and future expansion of the park.

The efforts of eight volunteers who maintain the Orion Veterans Memorial were rewarded at a recognition ceremony April 17, 2010.  They include Harley Burcham, Joe Zikewich, Art Rozanski, Ron Pryor, Bob Watros, Loren Schmidt, Ric Goodwill and Dwight Watros.

Each man received a personalized plaque ordered and paid for by Joe Zikewich.  Dr. Joe Mastromatteo presented each volunteer with a $25 McDonald's gift card, provided by VFW Post 334.

These volunteers keep the memorial area in top shape removing the snow in the winter, sweeping and cleaning the rest of the year, planting flowers, trimming shrubs and doing whatever is necessary to properly maintain it and make it attractive.  As a result more and more people find the memorial a comforting place to go for remembrance and meditation.

"These men really enjoy working together and there's a lot of good natured bantering going on while they work at the Memorial," Bob Watros manager of the Orion Veterans Memorial."  The camaraderie continues even after the work is done, they usually adjourn to the Lake Orion McDonald's, where they have more good-natured dialogue while enjoying their senior coffees."
